Kenneth Lyen
Bio
Dr Kenneth Lyen is a paediatrician.
He was involved in the founding of three special schools for disabled and autistic children, The Rainbow Centre at Margaret Drive (1987) and The Rainbow Centre at Yishun Park (1995), and the Rainbow Centre at Woodlands (2018). For his work with disabled children, he received the Public Service Star in 2022. Dr Lyen also co-founded the Haemophilia Society of Singapore to help children with haemophilia and related bleeding disorders.
Dr Kenneth Lyen graduated from Oxford University Medical School. He did his paediatric training at the Children’s Hospital Great Ormond Street London, and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He was appointed senior lecturer and consultant at the National University of Singapore. He has conducted online webinars for teaching medical students.
Ken has authored and co-authored 16 books on paediatrics, parenting, creativity, mental health, and education. He has published 22 original research papers on paediatric endocrinology, neurology, and infectious diseases, and 13 review articles in the Singapore Medical Association News. Two of the recent articles are about the Covid-19 pandemic. He has also been invited to referee original research publications for medical journals. He has previously served on the editorial board of the Singapore Medical Journal, Motherhood Magazine, and Young Families.
Ken has written and staged over 30 musicals in Singapore. In 1999 he wrote a screenplay which won first prize in the United TV International Screenwriting Competition. He wrote the telemovie, Love Poetry which was broadcast in April 2003. He wrote the horror television screenplay, The Bridge, which was broadcast in August 2004. He was awarded a Media Development Authority grant for the screenplay The Dawn (2006).
PAEDIATRICIAN
I am a specialist in paediatrics, trained at Oxford University and the Hospital for Sick Children at Great Ormond Street in London. I was appointed a diabetic research fellow at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Following that, I returned to Singapore to join the Department of Paediatrics at the National University Hospital under Professor Wong Hock Boon. MUSICAL COMPOSER
I compose music for musical theatre. Currently I have written nearly 200 songs for 30 musicals. I wrote some of the music for the MediaCorp Singapore television series School House Rockz (2008), and also for another series, Witz (2011). I also wrote the music for the Singapore Science Centre musical "One Kind of Science" which won the Creative Communication Award at the Asia Pacific Network of Science and Technology Centres Conference (ASPAC) 2019 in Australia.
SPECIAL EDUCATION
I was the founder of The Rainbow Centre which runs three schools for intellectually challenged children and persons on the autism spectrum. We have specially trained teachers to help with their education, and we provide speech therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, music and art therapy.
